FAQs

Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT®) is a non-invasive, personalized treatment that utilizes magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain. By analyzing an individual’s brainwave patterns through an electroencephalogram (EEG), clinicians tailor the therapy to address areas with abnormal activity, aiming to improve brain function and communication.

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a diagnostic test that measures electrical activity in the brain using small electrodes attached to the scalp. It helps identify abnormalities in brain wave patterns that may be associated with various neurological conditions.

An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) records the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time.

While both MeRT® and TMS involve magnetic stimulation of the brain, MeRT® is highly individualized. MeRT® customizes the frequency, location, and intensity of the magnetic pulses based on the patient’s unique EEG and EKG results, aiming for a more tailored and potentially effective treatment.

A typical MeRT® session involves the patient sitting comfortably while magnetic pulses are delivered to targeted areas of the brain. A standard session consists of 30 trains of electromagnetic stimulation, each lasting 6 seconds, with 54-second rest periods between trains. The entire appointment usually lasts about 45 minutes.

Patients undergoing MeRT® have reported various benefits, including:

  • Improved sleep quality

  • Enhanced concentration and focus

  • Better mood and emotional stability

  • Increased sociability and interaction

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Decreased pain levels

  • Improved mental clarity and memory

  • Increased motivation and adaptability

  • Reduced cravings for substances like drugs and alcohol

Side effects of MeRT® are generally few and mild. The most commonly reported is a mild tension headache at the site of stimulation, which typically resolves within 1-2 hours and responds well to over-the-counter pain relievers. Other potential side effects include hyperactivity, increased agitation, or euphoria. While there is a minimal risk of seizures, it is considered very low.

We typically recommend 6-8 weeks of treatment to achieve optimal results and lasting benefits from MeRT®. However, since every brain is unique, the treatment plan will be tailored to each patient based on their specific EEG/EKG data and the condition being addressed.

Please note that results depend on strict adherence to the prescribed treatment regimen. Individual outcomes may vary, and while many patients experience significant improvements, results cannot be guaranteed.

Yes, MeRT® is considered safe. The equipment used is FDA-cleared for the treatment of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). For other conditions, it is used “off-label.” Ongoing studies aim to expand FDA clearance for additional conditions.

In many cases, the effects of MeRT® treatment can last a lifetime, although some individuals may opt for occasional follow-up sessions as needed. Because every person is unique, treatment protocols and outcomes may vary. Your provider will schedule regular follow-up EEGs and consultations to monitor your progress and adjust the treatment plan if necessary.

It’s important to note that results are influenced by strict adherence to the prescribed regimen, and individual outcomes may vary. Generally, the longer the duration of MeRT® therapy, the more enduring the improvements tend to be. While many patients experience lasting benefits, results cannot be guaranteed.

MeRT® may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions or implanted devices, such as:

  • Pacemakers

  • Defibrillators

  • Vagal nerve stimulators

  • VP shunts or magnetic intracranial shunts

  • Deep brain stimulators

  • Epidural cortical stimulators

  • Steel shunts or stents

  • Cranial metal fragments (excluding titanium)

  • Cochlear implants

  • Aneurysm clips, coils, pipelines, or flow diversions

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals

  • Primary brain cancer or metastatic lesions in the brain (unless for palliative care)

  • Magnetic dental implants

  • Implanted cardioverter defibrillators (ICD)

  • Ocular implants
